Giving Up – A Question of Lent

In just a few short hours the Lenten season begins, and Facebook and twitter is full of commentary about what people are giving up or should give up for Lent.  I always thought that if I could tell people on Facebook what I was giving up then maybe it wasn’t a very good vice.  Shouldn’t you kind of be ashamed of your vice or is that just me?  I have some vices I like to pretend even God doesn’t know, which is silly of course, but seriously, don’t tell Him.  I decided then to google the top ten things the majority of people give up for Lent and here is what I found:

1. Alcohol

2. Chocolate or Sweets

3. Cursing

4. Facebook

5. Television

6. Junk Food

7. Soda

8. Smoking

9. Texting

10. Gossiping

I’m pretty sure all of the 7 deadly sins with some broken commandments are thrown in here, so then my next question (rhetorical) is who actually observes Lent?  Christians?  Non-Christians?  A mixture of both?  I’m not trying to be judgy judgy which I know is the first thing judgy judgy people say, but I’m seriously not, just pondering what I should seriously think about giving up for the next 40 days and by giving up this luxury or vice will I truly feel in closer relationship with God and will my journey in any way mimic Jesus’ 40 days in the desert.  All this serious pondering is just giving me a headache, so I briefly entertain the thought of giving up my New Year’s Resolutions.  Which reminds me that I made New Year’s Resolutions and that I actually wrote them down so I wouldn’t forget them.  Let me pull up the list.

Coincidentally, I have 10 New Year’s Resolutions for 2012, in no particular order:

1. Eat better

2. Exercise more

3. Cook more

4. Read Bible everyday

5. Read 100 books

6. Eat at dinner table with the family more often

7. Lose weight

8. Learn Italian

9. Attend Church Regulary

10. Be a better wife and mother

Hmmm.  Most of those resolutions I’m still actively doing.  Don’t get too excited, I didn’t say I was getting anywhere just that I haven’t quite thrown in the towel yet.  Reading # 3 reminds me I haven’t figured out yet what to fix for dinner, which prompts me to finish up this blog and go on Pinterest for helpful ideas and recipes.  I still have a few hours to figure out this whole Lent thing, maybe Pinterest can give me some ideas on what I should give up!
